From the information panel and Severn Trent website:
Stones Island is Severn Trent's contribution to the long-standing tradition of Derbyshire hilltop monuments.
Designed in 1991 by landscape architect Lewis Knight, Stones Island was created as a noticeable feature within the landscape and to showcase the surrounding countryside. The stones were cut from Derbyshire gritstone and fashioned in nearby Birchover. They vary in height from 1.8 to 4 meters and the largest stone weighs 7.6 tonnes.
Take a look through the holes in each of the stones and see what you can spot. There are toe holders for small children so thet can take a peek through the holes. All the paths around Stones Island are accessible letting everyone enjoy the views from the top.
