St Andrew's Church (Gallowgate)
St Andrew's Church (Gallowgate) submitted by Anne T : Ryder's Newcastle (St Andrew's Church) 1. Described as "(an) incised sandstone slab, set in the floor of Trinity Chapel, against the north wall. The simple cross has terminals with sharply angular ‘buds’ between short rounded ‘leaves’; semi-circular arch base. Mason’s (or carpenter’s?) square behind and to left of shaft. Thirteenth century?" Early Christian Sculptured Stone in Tyne and Wear

Tradition has it that this church was founded by King David of Scotland in the 12th century, possibly on the foundations of an earlier building. The church certainly pre-dates the 14th century town walls which form part of the boundary of the churchyard, so is "substantially the earliest of the three old parish churches of Newcastle".

The church is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 25169, which tells us that the church has "(a) 12th century chancel arch and lower part of tower and arcades; 13th century chancel and upper part of tower, and north transept; 14th century north chapel. Early 14th century south-west porch refronted 1726. 19th century restorations and addition of south transept". The Archaeological Assessment by Peter Ryder, Historic Buildings Consultant, can be downloaded from the Diocese of Newcastle website: St Andrew's, Newcastle.

In 2002, Peter Ryder recorded a number of incised cross slab grave covers built into the fabric of the church, mainly dated to the 11th, 12th or 13th century. Of the 28 he originally listed, many are either lost or now in the Great North Museum (originally the Museum of Antiquities). Five of these originally listed remain built into the church; in 2018, a further two slabs were recorded.

St Andrew's Church (Gallowgate)
St Andrew's Church (Gallowgate) submitted by Anne T : Ryder's Newcastle (St Andrew's Church) 2, now very worn and appears to be deteriorating relatively quickly through comparison with the drawings. It is in an area of high foot traffic in the chancel. Neighbouring slabs are protected by a rug.sRyder describes this as: "(a) Sandstone slab with incised design set in the chancel floor, north of centre. Decoration consists of a hammer and three horsesh... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Ryder describes this as: "(a) small sandstone slab, lacking its head, set in the chancel floor, north of centre, immediately west of (2) and opposite the priest’s door; incised design. Cross rising from stepped base, sword on right. An 1890 sketch (Blain, n.d VII, 80) shows it in present condition. Date uncertain". Comparison of this slab to the 19th c... St Andrew's Church (Gallowgate)
St Andrew's Church (Gallowgate) submitted by Anne T : Ryder's Newcastle (St Andrew's Church) 4. This was so high above my head, and in a narrow staircase, I was given permission to climb up into the pulpit to take a closer look. Ryder describes this as: "(a) sandstone slab with cross whose head is made up of a ring of six 9or eight?) bracelets, with multi-lobed terminals, carved in relief within a sunken circle. Re-used as a roof slab at the head of ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

St Andrew's Church (Gallowgate) submitted by Anne T : Ryder's Newcastle (St Andrew's Church) 5. "Part of a sandstone slab, re-used as head of narrow window immediately west of the door near the west end of the north aisle. Incised design of cross shaft with pair of shears to left. Date uncertain".

St Andrew's Church (Gallowgate)
St Andrew's Church (Gallowgate) submitted by Anne T : One of the two recently discovered cross slabs and included in the Archaeological Assessment of the church, page 23. "Re-used graveslab with end of incised sword, in internal face of west wall of south aisle".

St Andrew's Church (Gallowgate)
St Andrew's Church (Gallowgate) submitted by Anne T : This slab is recorded on page 23 of Ryder's Archaeological Assessment, and was not included in his original 2002 Archaeologia Aeliana. This cross slab is high above our heads, re-used as a lintel in a blocked doorway on the north side of the lower stage of the tower. Ryder correctly says it needs a ladder to examine it properly. With the bright spot light right next to the slab, we were unable to...
