Anne T visited on 8th Nov 2017 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Anglo Saxon Fragments, High Coniscliffe: This was a most unexpected location, as my perception was that the church should be within a quiet little village, but the reality was it was just off the main road, the A67 to Bishop Auckland. We parked by the footpath at NZ 22567 15316, and had to walk past the front of the Old Rectory to get to the lych gate. There were so many stones in the walls of this church. So many of them were greatly weathered sandstone, and looked like any of them could have been carved then worn down. The walls of the church were a real patchwork of colours – light, medium, dark and red sandstone. We couldn’t get into the porch. A notice on the gate of the church said keys were available at houses nearby, but none of them had lights on, so we headed home, but not before I’d spotted the view from the south western end of the churchyard down to the River Tees below. Great!

St Edwin's (High Coniscliffe) submitted by Anne T : This stone is recorded as AS Corpus Coniscliffe 01 and is to be found in the exterior north wall of the tower. It dates from the 10th century. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Cross in County Durham

St Edwin's Church is a grade II listed building, the west end of the nave dating from around 1170 AD, the western part of the south nave wall to the early/mid 13th century and the nave, chancel and tower to the 14th century. It is scheduled as Historic England List ID 1115562.

Sitting on an impressive site above the north bank of the River Tees in High Coniscliffe village, on the A67 heading west out of Darlington. It is made of a patchwork of different coloured, very worn sandstones, and incorporates a number of pre-Conquest stones built into the interior and exterior walls.

These stones are recorded in Volume 1 of the Corpus of Anglo Saxon Stone Sculpture, starting at Coniscliffe 01.

At the time of our visit, the church was locked, but a list of key holders is pinned on the lych gate. Only one of the stones listed on the AS Corpus is within the building, within the porch.

St Edwin's (High Coniscliffe)
St Edwin's (High Coniscliffe) submitted by Anne T : We spotted this fragment of dark red sandstone which apparently had the worn outline of a cross on it. Whether this was just the effect of the weathering and our imaginations, I'm not sure, but I photographed it anyway. (Vote or comment on this photo)

St Edwin's (High Coniscliffe)
St Edwin's (High Coniscliffe) submitted by Anne T : This fragment of grey sandstone is located in the exterior west wall of the tower, about 15ft from the ground and immediately to the left of AS Corpus Coniscliffe 02. it is of uncertain date but is "a clearly cut arched or circular flat band moulding." (Vote or comment on this photo)

St Edwin's (High Coniscliffe)
St Edwin's (High Coniscliffe) submitted by Anne T : This cross shaft fragment dates from the first half of the tenth century and is built into the exterior north wall of the nave, about half way along. It is recorded as AS Corpus Coniscliffe 06. (Vote or comment on this photo)

St Edwin's (High Coniscliffe)
St Edwin's (High Coniscliffe) submitted by Anne T : This is either a part of a cross shaft or a cross head, recorded as AS Corpus Coniscliffe 04. It is located in the exterior south wall of the nave and dates from the mid tenth to the mid eleventh century. (Vote or comment on this photo)

St Edwin's (High Coniscliffe)
St Edwin's (High Coniscliffe) submitted by Anne T : Another very difficult stone to spot without a photograph, as all the stones are very weathered. This is AS Corpus Coniscliffe 03, a cross shaft fragment of uncertain date. The carving shows a worn swag. (Vote or comment on this photo)

St Edwin's (High Coniscliffe)
St Edwin's (High Coniscliffe) submitted by Anne T : This is AS Corpus Coniscliffe 02, dating from the last half of the 10th century. It is located in the exterior west wall of the tower, about 15 ft (not inches as the Corpus record says!) from the ground.
