Rock Art in Northumberland

England's Rock Art entry for ERA-2047 Morwick Rock Shelter is the summary record for all the Morwick rock art panels, which Beckensall describes as some of the most unusual motifs in Britain.

Beckensall describes this location as "sandstone cliffs at Morwick, rising from the River Coquet at a fording place ... the site has a shut-in feel, despite the fact the land opens up on the north part of the river. The sun seldom reaches the north-facing motifs ... However, we have to accept that these motifs lie in isolation from any definite prehistoric sites. The spiral motifs are quite different from cups and rings. The only other examples in Northumberland are at Lilburn and West Horton."

Click on the ERA link above for Beckensall's Archive Notes, along with photographs and slides of the location from Beckensall's Archive.

The original Beckensall record can be found at Internet Archive: Beckensall 1114 Morwick Rock Shelter.
