TheCaptain visited on 25th Sep 2022 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Day up to Dunstanburgh castle. Park at Craster, buy sandwiches then walk along the coast northwards to the castle. Excellent.

Dunstanburgh Castle

Dunstanburgh Castle is a 14th century fortress built for Thomas, second Earl of Lancaster.

The archaeological survey conducted in 2003 revealed that the earthen bank in front of the castle's southern wall overlies an earlier earthwork, possibly belonging to an Iron Age promontory fort. The excavations in 1930-31 revealed an Iron Age hearth within the castle.

Dunstanburgh castle has been a ruin since Tudor times. The northwest wall sits on a 120ft high basalt cliff face. The castle was begun in 1313 by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, by 1380 was the stronghold of John of Gaunt and is still haunted by Sir Guy the Seeker, who was entrapped in the ruins by...
