Anne T visited on 30th Apr 2017 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 4 St. Mary's Well, Durham: From St. Cuthbert’s Well we walked past the Old Fulling Mill and the Boat House, across Prebend’s Bridge, were we heard shrieks from the river below. Peering over the bridge, we saw the lady rowers trying to avoid going into the bank! St. Mary’s Well is easy to find. Immediately to the western end of Prebend’s Bridge there is a footpath running off to your right. St. Mary’s Well is about 20 yards to the north up the footpath, on the western side. Couldn’t find any entry on this in Pastscape, although again Laurence Hunt's Ancient, Healing and Holy Wells gave us some information, along with SolarMegalith's entry on the Portal.

Holy Well or Sacred Spring in County Durham

In the 19th century this well was in popular use, "of great repute", "much resorted to". In 2012 it has a trickle of clean water into a small stone basin, and a stone arc of wellhead, but nothing to say what it is. None of the Durham City World Heritage Site wells are properly looked after.

The well is easily accessible by the side of a footpath from Prebends Bridge up to South Street- the second path on your right, as you leave the bridge.

The Holy Wells of County Durham are listed on a website by Laurence Hunt, "The Ancient Healing and Holy Wells of County Durham". Several of his wells are not yet on Megalithic.
