Anne T visited on 17th Sep 2015 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 5 St Mary's Churchyard Cross, Wirksworth: I've split this page off as the cross has it's own HE scheduling record and Pastscape record, and got a little lost in with the other Anglo Saxon carved stones within the church itself.
Until we wandered around the churchyard, we didn't know this cross was here, so it was a really nice surprise to have seen it.

Whilst the church of St Mary the Virgin has a number of Anglo Saxon carved stones within it, this free standing cross can be found in the churchyard and deserves a mention in its own right.
This churchyard cross is scheduled as Historic England List ID 1008822, which tell us the cross is located west of the church, and comprises a dressed rectangular socket stone and a rectangular, 1.3m tall, cross shaft. The cross head has now been lost. "Because St Mary's Church is known to have originated in the Anglian period, it has been suggested that the socle was originally that of an Anglian high cross and that the medieval shaft was fitted into it after being moved from the market place. However, from appearances there is no evidence for this. Weathering and toolmarks on the socle match it to the shaft and it is more likely that both date to the 13th century when the church was rebuilt".
The cross is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 310955.
