Long Barrow in Hampshire

A Neolithic long barrow in Nutbane has been excavated in 1957 by Faith Morgan. The oldest structure built in this place was an enclosure in which contained four pits, probably postholes of a Neolithic mortuary house. In this structure three skeletons (two males and one child) were discovered. Later the larger mortuary house has been build. After that the timber chamber has been filld with earth.

The long barrow was 60 m long and 26 m wide. Not visible traces of it survived till nowdays - the mound is completely ploughed out.

The notes for the Hampshire long distance walk "The Brenda Parker Way" state that there is some evidence of the site: "The now ploughed-out Nutbane Long Barrow is through the field gap back on your right, its site only determined by a slight bump and paler soil."

Rodney Castleden's book "Neolithic Britain", Tempus, Stroud gives the dimentions as 55metres by 20 metres.

Contemporary Archaeology in Theory - A Reader edited by R Preucel & I Hodder 1996 published by Blackwell, Maldon has a site plan on page 404.

Megaliths and Long Barrows in Britain by F Lynch 1997 states that " 4 disarticulated skeletons were excavated from the site.
