Rock Art in Yorkshire West

A large boulder in the grounds of the Harewood House estate near Harrogate. A very worn carving of seven concentric rings lies on it's north-western flank. The carving faces out over the valley to the conspicuous outcrop called Almscliff Crag. Apparently, the midwinter full moon would have set behind the crags at the lunar standstill in 1800 B.C.! If you visit, watch out for the Red Kites and over zealous estate workers intent on preventing gentle trespass!

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also feature a page for this boulder - see their entry for the Grey Stone, Harewood, West Yorkshire, which gives directions for finding this stone, together with photographs and a brief archaeology & history.

Pastscape Monument No. 53173 also records this stone, which adds: "The Grey Stone in Harewood Park bears a carving of the 'cup and ring' type similar to the markings on the Panorama Stone Ilkley. The carving has a shield like appearance, with seven concentric ovals, and is 24 ins high by 21 ins. wide. By a classification of local cup and ring markings, the Grey Stone example appears to be one of the earliest in the district with a suggested dating to the early Bronze age."
