Oakley Wood Fort
Oakley Wood Fort submitted by gautrek : This is about the only bank and ditch i could find in the area of this fort. There seem to be some very shallow banks around but its hard to make out which are the fort banks and which are not.I didn't have much luck locating much of this fort at all.Maybe if i had had a proper OS map then i may have got on better. Re: Oakley Wood Fort by Anonymous on Friday, 20 March 2015
I visited today and came across this page as a result of searching for additional information having discovered the earthworks on a walk around the woods.

As mentioned above, it is quite a significant area with large banks and ditches that make quite an impression on the woods in which they stand.

There is more information and some speculation as to its origin on a local website http://www.oakleywood.org.uk/about-the-wood/oakley-wood-camp/

Re: Oakley Wood Fort by Anonymous on Tuesday, 04 September 2012
I have visited this site on two occasions, the most recent being 3rd Sept 2012.
It is not a hill fort as it is not on a hill, but the embankments are very well built and would have involved a great deal of effort by a well organised group.
My studied opinion, which I have held for some years is that it is of the Viking era and probably a Winter encampment of a large war band.
Pretty certain it was not some sort of forestry demarcation as there would be no need for such sophisticated defenses.
Maybe the owners (Warwickshire County Council) should arrange an archeological investigation.

Went here yesterday, it is quite a large area, it seems to have 2 entrances. There is a obvious corner to it also with a fairly high bank on that corner

This must have been quite a large fort. The dirch and banks can be followed over quite a large area.

The main banks are fairly obvious and show a clear square outline. I tbegins roughly a few yards across from where the arable field abuts the woods in the corner.
