Jon_Coxhead visited on 4th Jan 2023 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Very windy day on my visit [04/01/23] (only a 15-minute bike ride away from my house) so didn't stay long or do any exploring on the top of the hill. From what I could tell, as an update to previous observations, the Goarse has largely been cleared from the main hill (although it could definitely return if not checked). The area around the hill still appears to be used by horse riders etc. There is still considerable Gourse at the point of entry and near the spring; however, it's evident that the footpath is 'maintained' and that the area around the spring has been cut back (I imagine the area near the spring would quickly be overrun with grass and weeds in the summer if not kept in check). I plan to go back in Springtime and explore the hill and generally see how the site is being maintained during this time of year. I'm very happy to have recently discovered 'The Megalithic Portal' and in turn, realise that this interesting site is right on my doorstep.
A small spring at the foot of Sheddons Hill, a neolithic flint working site.
There is a triangular mortared stone well head, but this was very overgrown and neglected in 2012. There is a better picture on www.washingtonlass.com/shadenshill.html, when the well was less overgrown.
The same site has some speculations about the archaeology of Sheddons Hill. Certainly, a large number of worked flints were found here from 1923 to 1933, some of which are now in the Sunderland Museum. Small flint nodules can still be found. There are large sandstone boulders on the hill, several with modern carvings of names and dates (1915, for example). Linear features on some of the rocks are fossils of Carboniferous trees.
