In October and November 1907 the construction of a new road in Fatfield led to the removal of a barrow, composed of sand, and the excavation of three cists within it. The discovery was in the back lane between Castle Street and Victoria View, about just over half-way up from the south end, about 240 yards from the river and 135m from the ridge above it.
All three cists contained inhumation burials (skeletons), and one a food vessel. The sides of the first two cists, excavated in October 1907, were each formed of one large stone, and both cists were covered by one very large slab which lay 30cm below the surface. Both were filled with fine sand. The third cist, opened in November 1907, was 25cm below the surface, and measured 105cm x 75cm x 10cm thick. It covered a cist with the internal dimensions of 105cm x 70cm x 60cm deep. Each side was composed of a long and a short slab, with a narrow one at each end, and no base. The food vessel, now lost, was 19cm high, 12cm in diameter with the walls 12mm thick. The ornamentation comprised thin parallel lines around the vessel, with indented thumb marks between them.
At the time the cists were found, this area was mostly housing. It is now an area of parkland.
There is a rather dark photo of one of the cists with a skeleton, in Roger Miket's book "The Prehistory of Tyne and Wear". He gives a slightly different grid reference at NZ30755372, which has been planted with trees. Both this and the HER grid reference being, I think, guesswork. When I visited the site, a park-keeper cutting the grass indicated a low mound at NZ30895372 as the barrow, though this must be hearsay. An excavation in 1977 at the HER grid reference failed to locate the site.
My text is based on the Tyne and Wear HER; Tyne and Wear HER 318
