Hillfort in Wiltshire

An Iron Age hill fort enclosing 26 acres with an entrance on the east and probable occupation remains within.

From SolarMegalith: the earthworks are in perfect condition on most of the hillforts perimeter. There are 4 entrances in the ramparts, but only the NE one is surely original. Interior of the hillfort is under pasture, western and northern part of the earthworks are covered with a forest.

A truly beautiul place to be, peaceful and exciting. I grew up going to this fort and it will always be my favourite place in the world.

The holder of the land in the Doomsday book was one Rainerius de Fortesburge. There is some contention in the family as to whether he was a Saxon who took the last name of his hoding (as waw the Norman custom) or in fact a Norman himself. His family eventually spread to many parts of the empire and the Americas as Fosbury, Fosberry, Fosbrey, Fosbre etc etc. The site itself was the "fort castle" in the language of the time, also indicating it was the fort of a local chief (before the Normans). A significant branch of the family emigrated to Ireland in the 1600's in addition to researchable members of the English trunk.

This is a fine site, of easy uphill access from west of Vernham Dean - park on side of road at SU3318 5644. This is a bivallate, iron age hillfort with impressive ramparts. It is an open access area and a walk round the circumfenerence offers great views of the North Wessex Downs, looking up Hippenscombe valley. By the east portal, just off the public footpath is a magnificent Beech Tree at SU3219 5650. This is a historic area, with the old Roman road of Chute Causeway, now a minor road, across the valley to the south and west, uncharacteristically diverting from the straight line to go round the valley of Hippenscombe. Along the road the valum of the original road is visble and many other earth works.

Fieldwork and report by Matt Nichol during 2001 gives the history of the site. He picked up burnt flint, a water worn pebble perhaps a slingstone, and a sherd of pottery of fine sandy fabric. Sherds found in interior, also many pits and hollows.

Follow link for more information about this fascinating area.

I have been all around looking for the entrance. I came through Vernham Dean to Fosbury then got lost. Where do I go from there?

Fosbury ring is magnificent.Overlooking chute causeway(the only place where the romans went round the valley instead of going in a straight line). In the middle of the ring lies a saucer barrow, and there are two old ponds with in the the camp its self. This hill fort is well worth a visit, and has a feeling all of its own.By the way opposite on the hill 9chute cause way)there is a stone which looks like it was part of a henge or a standing stone,it lies at the entrance to a collapsed tomb.Wonderful place wonderful country side.Jus down the road following chute cause way there is a long barrow,it just keeps getting better and better.Royston.
