Testwood Lakes
Testwood Lakes submitted by JimChampion : Part of a bronze age boat was discovered during the excavation of Meadow Lake, the most northerly in the Testwood Lakes complex. This photo shows a 'replica' of the kind of boat that the find came from. A plaque on the side of the boat reads 'Boats of this type were once used to cross the English Channel 3500 years ago. They were made of oak planks sewn together with twisted yew bark. The remains ... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Visitor centre in Hampshire. Testwood Lakes were created in the 1990s to form a reservoir and artificial lakes for wildlife. During the excavation several bronze age artefacts were discovered, including two bridges, part of a sea-going boat and a bronze rapier.

The bridges are two of the oldest ever identified in Britain. It is thought that they once spanned the River Blackwater, a tributary of the Test that flows into Southampton Water. The present course of the river is to the east of the lakes complex.

Some of the timbers and a replica of the bronze sword are on display in the Testwood Lakes study centre, run by the Hampshire and IoW Wildlife Trust, in partnership with Southern Water who own the site. A recreation of the bronze age boat is located on the eastern side of Testwood Lake and a replica roundhouse has been built alongside the path to the Birdwatching Hides.

The excavations were carried out by Wessex Archaeology, who describe their findings here on their website, including an animation of the bronze age bridge 3D visualisation.

Access There is a free car park next to Testwood Lake, and visitors to the study centre can use a car park next to the study centre building, a little further on from the main car park. The site is signposted from the nearby A36 road.

A house of this size and construction is believed to have housed one family. Most of the timber used to build this house came from this Wildlife Reserve. The large Oak posts were brought in from another Trust Reserve at Roydon Wood... (Vote or comment on this photo)
