Hodur visited on 3rd Jun 2018 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 4 A bit of walk uphill for those who have trouble getting around well. The site itself is only recognisable because of its eastern rampart. Not bad ambience except for the distant noise from the M6.

What's the access like for farmland? I considered looking here when we camped at Balsall Common nearby last August, but was not sure of access; time, weather, and other factors also worked against my visit - but we return to the area nearly annually, so I'd like to have a look sometime. Any pictures you could share? Cheers, Tim.

It's right next to the road and no problem. The farmer's left a track across for people to walk on so you can get right into the heart of it. I've submitted pix that should appear soon (assuming I got it right!)

Well worth a detour simply for the sandstone outcrop!

Access on Farmland is very good with a number of footpaths running very close to the site. also in the area are numerous medieval moated sites and literally hundreds of worked mesolithic flints.....A really important historic area in Britain..... I have added a fotpath map link for guidance around this beautiful area.

Oh I forgot. There's easy parking at the bottom of the hill and several places where you can pull off the road on the way up.

Been and had a look at this today (16 2 05) and it's quite a dramatic setting. It's on a promontory of red sand stone known locally as Corley Rocks, down a road called Rock Lane - which gives an idea of the setting. The western side is a sheer drop about the height of a tall house and the northern side is shaped into a double rampart. Difficult to tell at this age whether the rocks do it naturally or it was worked to that shape. It's quite well covered in trees.

Out on top it's planted with some sort of root crop at the moment but the owner's left what appears to be the eastern side rampart as a footpath so you can get all the way across for a good look at the site. To the south it has a low but steep drop onto a kind of platform (sort of like a motte and bailey) before the land slopes away again. It must have been a great place to settle because you can see for miles from the east side. (Unfortunately the M6 runs not far away so you can hear the traffic in the distance. But not too bad ambience for that close to Coventry and Birmingham)
