Saint Alkmund's well

Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Derbyshire.
St. Alkmund’s Well is an amazing survival, an unexpected surprise in this built up part of Derby, twixt the multistorey block of flats and the houses.

Where other wells were filled in or even pumped, this has survived. It is dedicated to a Saxon saint, who died in 800 AD. His tomb located in church nearby (now demolished), and now in Derby museum. The water runs a quite a pace and two elderly locals who were pleasant surprised to see my interest said it tasted very good. Traditionally dressed, which was restarted in 1870s, and continued infrequently until 1993. It has been vandalised but has recently been repaired.

This well is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 313289, which adds: "Mentioned in a 14th century charter. A natural spring with modern surrounding wall."

The well is also featured on The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) - see their entry for St. Alkmund’s Well, Derby, Derbyshire, which gives directions for finding this site, a brief archaeology & history, a recent photograph and local folklore. TNA adds: "The well is below ground level with four steps to its water which flows with some force into an oval basin. A stone carving states its name. The plaque reads: 'Until the area was built up from 1814, the well was in a rural setting, part of St Helen's Park. The stone niche surrounding the well was built by the Rev Henry Cantrell in the early 18th century'", adding: "Cox (1875–9) records that a vicar of S. Werburgh’s was cured of his low consumption, after constantly drinking its water."

Admins: Can we have 'St.' Alkmund's Well as an alternative title so this can be located quickly in 'Search'. Tried last evening, forgetting it was spelled in full - 'Saint'. Thanks.

Very good point Angie, and i have now done this. But should it be St or St. ?????

I often suffer a problem in searching with this very same thing - and in French with Ste or Sainte, and also with hyphenated names. And apostrophes.

Best to not type the whole name into the search. Alkmund would do just as well.

Brief dip out of advanced book writing....

St does not need a full stop at the end as there is nothing truncated after the last initial; if we do it for this one, then all of them need doing.

When dealing with very unusual names, typing just the personal name should get what you want.

Hope to be back with you all proper soon. This book will be finished by month's end!

    Cheers :o)

    Tim

Always try the Google site search button if the standard search doesn't help. Google are a lot better at searching than our quick thing

Checked with Janet Bord's new wells gazeteer, and she lists it with the northing at 370 - FYI - Tim.

Got to disagree with that grid ref! :o) had to be in a Derby today, and took a look; this grid ref places it beneath Handyside Street on Multimap; the well is on Well St, and is just above the next grid line, so I read that as SK351371. I wasted 20 minutes first thing looking around for the well at the given grid ref.

I had a tour with a blue badge guide later today, who told me exactly where to find it (on Well St next to the big block of flats), which is much further up than where this ref places it. Cheers, Tim

The grid reference should be SK352368 according to Peter Naylor's Ancient Wells & Springs of Derbyshire (also, I've been there and this reference comes up at the right place on Multimap).
