Devil's Stone (Copgrove)
Devil's Stone (Copgrove) submitted by rogerkread : Not easy to photograph, so have played about with the settings for the three images here. There are a few images on the web if you google for them which are perhaps clearer, from the days when it was outside the church. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This carving is now on the south wall of the nave inside St. Michaelā€™s church at Copgrove. Until recently it was outside, on the east wall of the chancel at the corner with the north wall; before ā€œrestorationā€ of the church by the Victorians it was reputedly on the inside north chancel wall.

It is badly worn and so the features are difficult to discern, but it is clearly pre-Christian, usually attributed to the Iron Age or else a Romano-British copy of an Iron Age symbol. Exactly what is represented is a subject of debate. The Collins Guide to Archaeology suggests either a ā€˜god with hammer and dish of abundanceā€™ or else a priest with sacrificial vessel. Clearly a sexy female priest! More likely a Sheela-na-gig? See the interesting discussion here.

Devil's Stone (Copgrove) submitted by rogerkread : One with the light in the church turned off - you can't see the human figure so well here but the separate Tau cross (hammer? axe?) is perhaps clearer. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Devil's Stone (Copgrove) submitted by rogerkread : The 'ladle' in the figure's right hand is clear on this one. (Vote or comment on this photo)
