Laurences Barrow
Laurences Barrow submitted by JimChampion : June 2007. South-eastern side of Laurences barrow. The woodpile in the foreground is a stack of dead gorse stems from clearance work on the heath. The gorse-covered barrow is an obvious landmark on the flat heathland, and the neighbouring windswept silver birch tree is another prominent feature. Rain-clouds are gathering to the north. A bowl barrow in the south-west area of Beaulieu Heath. The mound is around 3 metres high and 33 metres in diameter. It is surrounded by a ditch which can become waterlogged during the wetter seasons, and has a very slight outer bank.

The "Drivers' map" of the New Forest from 1814 shows few archaeological features, other than those which were prominent landmarks or boundaries. One exceptional area was Beaulieu Heath, where many of the barrows are marked and some are even named. This barrow, on the heath to the south-east of Two Bridges Bottom is labelled as "Laurences Barrow". The maps are available online from Graham Cooper's New Forest website.

Access The barrow is very prominent on an area of flat (dry) heath to the west of Two Bridges Bottom - it has a large silver birch tree growing alongside it. The two nearby car parks (Crockford Clump and Crockford) are usually closed in the winter/spring to try and reduce disturbance to heathland wildlife.

Laurences Barrow
Laurences Barrow submitted by JimChampion : June 2007. Southern side of Laurences barrow - the mound is on the left, the ditch in the centre and the slight outer bank is just visible. In the distance, across the flat heath, are the pines of Norley Inclosure and the B3054 road. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Laurences Barrow
Laurences Barrow submitted by JimChampion : June 2007. Laurences Barrow, with the landmark windswept silver birch to the left of the mound. This view is looking from the north-west - in the distance (behind the silver birch tree) are the pines of Crockford Clump, and (to the right of the barrow) Norley Inclosure. The barrow mound itself is overgrown with gorse and has a slight hollow in its summit. (Vote or comment on this photo)
