TheCaptain visited on 23rd Aug 2019 I particularly liked the Lego model of an Iron Age hillfort situated in front of the Roman Fullerton Mosaic, which was found in the main room of a Romano-British villa in the nearby village of Fullerton. The centre piece to the mosaic is the god Mars in his role as protector of agriculture.

The Museum of the Iron Age in Andover primarily tells the story of Danebury Ring, the huge Iron Age hillfort a few miles to the south.

Taken from their web site.
Situated across two floors, the Museum of the Iron Age tells the story of the Danebury hillfort which lies to the south west of Andover. The hillfort was excavated by Professor Barry Cunliffe between 1969 and 1988 and is one of the best-studied sites of the British Iron Age.

Cerridwen Connelly here...

Not that I am trying to put anyone off visiting this little museum, but just to make you aware that it is very SMALL (as musuems go) and some of the exhibits are reconstructions and not the genuine artefacts from Danebury.

Worth a visit nonetheless - and the staff are very knowledgeable about Danebury and eager to chat about it.

Outing to Danebury Iron Age Hillfort and Museum of the Iron Age 16th August by Andy B on Friday, 08 June 2007

Outing to Danebury Iron Age Hillfort and Museum of the Iron Age, Andover.
10:45 am, Thursday, 16 August, 2007
An all-day own car outing to the hillfort at Danebury and the Museum of the Iron Age, Andover.

Danebury is one of the most extensively studied hillforts in Europe. Evidence uncovered during many seasons of excavations led by Professor Barry Cunliffe has revealed that the fort was built 2500 years ago and occupied for some 500 years until the Romans arrived, though the main gate – the key to the defences – seems to have been burnt down around 100BC, after which, although it continued in use, the site seems to have been no longer defended and its importance declined. Much of what we know of the Iron Age in Britain results from analysis of the discoveries at Danebury. In the morning we will be given a guided tour of the site by David Allen, Senior Keeper of Archaeology for Hampshire County Museums Service, who will explain the chronology of the fort, the layout of the defences, and the evidence of habitation and ritual use.

After lunch drive to Andover for a visit to the Museum of the Iron Age which houses many of the artefacts uncovered during Professor Cunliffe’s excavations. The Museum also has life-size models and reconstructions of Iron Age life.

The tour will take about 2 hours and involve a walk of between one and two miles.

Booking Essential.
