The area of heathland (sometimes called Beaulieu Hilltop Heath to distinguish it from the Beaulieu Heath a few miles to the west) and conifer plantations to the east of the Beaulieu river is peppered with Bronze Age barrows, sometimes occuring in groups (or "cemeteries") and sometimes singly. Few exceed 2 metres in height, and excavation of the barrows has revealed little in the way of "grave goods" like those from the Wessex chalk uplands.
The poor sandy soils of the heath have hardly been touched by agriculture since the Bronze Age, thus many barrows have survived intact. The heath was used by the allied forces during the 1939-1945 war, particularly in preparation for the D-day landings, and some of the barrow sites were disturbed by the military activity of that time.
