durhamnature visited on 23rd Jul 2012 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 3 The tumulus is just the very top of the hill, underneath the trig point. The hill itself is an outcrop of the magnesian limestone. Very colourful today, with dozens of species of wild flowers including hundreds of Pyramidal Orchids. The fly tipping along the track below the hill detracts from the ambience.

A plan of Hastings Hill and illustrations of the finds, including pottery and antler picks, can be seen in Roger Miket's "The Prehistory of Tyne and Wear".
