Swarkestone Lows
Swarkestone Lows submitted by gautrek : A view from the top of the mound looking east.I have circled what i believe to be the remains of two of the other mounds which used to be here. They can just be made out in the field next door as slight humps. Apparently there where six mounds here before WWII. (5 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Swarkestone Lows
Swarkestone Lows submitted by Infinite_Fate : This shot has the same pronlems as the last one. This one shows, in the foreground, what I expect are the remains of one the barrows which were excavated during the nineteenth century. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Swarkestone Lows
Swarkestone Lows submitted by Infinite_Fate : I took these photographs with a totally inappropriate (read:wrong) speed film and the pictures turned out really grainy so I've had to mess about with brightness and contrast to reduce the 'grain fog'. (Vote or comment on this photo)

The Swarkestone Bridge always raises a smile - the number of hub/tyre scars on the kerb from people not judging the mild zigzagging is cheap and juvenile entertainment :-)

The barrow is on the Swarkestone side of the A50. In Swarkestone there's a junction between the A514 (the bridge road) and the A5132 (to Barrow/Willington). Take the A5132 from Swarkestone and the (narrow) road first on your right leads to the barrow. As far as I remember you go past a garden centre. Alternatively, you could take the second right as it loops round too :-)

Which side of the bridge do you turn off for the site?
I pass this one (and swear I'll investigate it!)every time I visit my youngest son and family in Allenton, south central Derby, coming across the lovely, ancient, (very long and not-very-wide) 'causeway' bridge at Swarkestone, whilst driving south/north.
Come up from Devon via the M5, skirting Birmingham via M42/A42, then turn off through Ashby-de-la-Zouch (with its interesting castle ruins) going north 'as the crow flies', following 'Ticknall' sign. At Ticknall follow 'Derby' (not Melbourne - though that village has a very picturesque lake and lovely Norman church), and you'll cross the causeway bridge.
It's a very picturesque drive and a last lung-full of fresh country air and views before being immersed in the drab inner city streets! (Chellaston and Shelton Lock look much nicer than Allenton/Osmaston!)

To be perfectly honest I would say Derby (its Chellaston suburb at any rate) is the closest town.

Car access is up a small road and the barrows (or what remains of them) are in a field immediately to the right of the road with a narrow farm track turning in front of it. Alternatively there's a relatively straightforward cycle across Sinfin Moor (no height to gain despite the name) coming from the Derby side of the A50 (a bridge crosses this).

When I went the neighbour of the field's owner thought it would be okay for me to go in the field and take photos - which I'll post (a) when I find 'em and (b) when i work out how to! :-)
