Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion : Bowl barrow on Beaulieu Heath East at grid reference SU411036, looking NW at sunset. This barrow is 24m in diameter and just over 1m high: not tall in absolute terms but it stands out on the scrubby plain of Beaulieu Heath. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Barrows in Hampshire

The area of heathland (sometimes called Beaulieu Hilltop Heath to distinguish it from the Beaulieu Heath a few miles to the west) and conifer plantations to the east of the Beaulieu river is peppered with Bronze Age barrows, sometimes occuring in groups (or "cemeteries") and sometimes singly. Few exceed 2 metres in height, and excavation of the barrows has revealed little in the way of "grave goods" like those from the Wessex chalk uplands.

The poor sandy soils of the heath have hardly been touched by agriculture since the Bronze Age, thus many barrows have survived intact. The heath was used by the allied forces during the 1939-1945 war, particularly in preparation for the D-day landings, and some of the barrow sites were disturbed by the military activity of that time.

Beaulieu Heath (East)
Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion : Category *A* Solstice. Late June evening on Beaulieu heath with the sun almost at its most northwesterly setting. The bowl barrow at SU416039 stands in silhouette - at 5m high it is huge by New Forest standards, and a very prominent landmark on this wide open heathland. The streaks of light projecting up from the clouds were even more striking a few moments before when I first tried to tak... (9 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion : Composite photo of the large bell barrow (25m diameter and 2.5m high) at SU403051, one of four round barrows in a row. This prickly barrow is particularly noticeable from the nearby Beaulieu Road. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion : This gorse and bracken covered mound in silhouette below and beyond the pin tree is the bowl barrow (centred on grid reference SU41000260). It is the largest of a line of four to the east of the Moonhills car park. The EH record of scheduled monuments says that the barrow is 14 metres in diameter and nearly 1 metre high. The top of the barrow mound features a slight hollow, which is probably a res... (Vote or comment on this photo)

The top of the barrow mound features a slight hollow, which is probably a result of early antiquarian digging or barrow robbing. This phot... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion : A view east from the barrow at grid reference SU40750350. The gorse in the foreground is growing on the barrow mound. In the middle distance is the larger barrow at SU40890352, and beyond that to the left is the barrow at SU41170360. The chimneys of the Fawley oil refinery are in the far distance.

The EH record of scheduled monuments says that the barrow is 20.5 metres in diameter and stands up to 1.3 metres high. It is one of several barrows on this flat part of Hilltop Heath.

Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion : Looking towards the north side of the bowl barrow at grid reference SU40890352. The pony grazing in the foreground is one of the many commoners' stock that graze the open New Forest heathland. It is wearing a reflective collar which is supposed to make it more visible on the unfenced roads that cross the heathland. The New Forest heaths, such as this, have for many hundreds of years been considere...

Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion : This is the largely in-filled ditch on the northern side of the bowl barrow centred on grid reference SU40890352. The EH record of scheduled monuments says that the ditch is 1.5 metres wide. The bracken-covered barrow mound, to the right, is 30 metres in diameter and stands up to 2 metres high.

According to the EH record of scheduled monuments this barrow is 24 metres in diameter and up to 1.4 metres high. It is a prominent feature on this very flat piece of Beaulieu Hilltop Heath. This is a composite image formed from two photos.

Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion : Linear arrangement of four round barrows at SU403051. The ditch and mound of a large bell barrow are on the right in the foreground. The gorse covered mound in the top of the picture is the end of a pair of twin bowl barrows. Hidden beyond these is another bell barrow. The group run parallel to the Beaulieu Road and stand out from the surrounding heathland as spiky dark green mounds.

Beaulieu Heath (East)
Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion : Close-up of the ditch of the largest bowl barrow at SU403051. This ditch is still well defined and nothing other than grass grows in it - this is typical of the round barrows on the New Forest heathland and I guess it must have something to do with the soil being more compacted in the ditch. Its also clear that the barrow mound (on the right) supports quite different vegetation to the surrounding ...

Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion : Looking east across Beaulieu Heath from the top of the large bell barrow at SU416039. In the foreground is a 13m diameter 'fancy barrow', which is little more than a few lumps with different vegetation to the surrounding heathland. The fence on the far side of the heathland marks the Forest boundary (perambulation) and the green mounds just the other side of it are a linear group of three bowl bar...

Beaulieu Heath (East)
Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion : Looking east across the eastern part of Beaulieu Heath from the boundary with Holbury Purlieu. All the bush-covered mounds visible on the heathland are round barrows of some kind: bowl barrows, bell barrows and the odd 'fancy' barrow. You can park on the verges of the roads that cross the heath towards Beaulieu, but there is a more pleasant approach. Park at the Old Mill Inn at Holbury (its ...

Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion : A close up composite of the well-preserved smaller bell barrow at SU416039, part of the barrow cemetery west of Holbury in the New Forest. The ever-present stacks of the Fawley refinery can be seen on the right. They'll probably be gone in another hundred years, only a tiny fraction of the age of this barrow!

Beaulieu Heath (East)
Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion : Looking NE at the smaller bell barrow from the vantage point of the larger bell barrow at SU416039, with Little Holbury in the distance. This barrow is 16m in diamter, about 2m high and a wide berm separates it from the surrounding quarry ditch. Water still gathers in the ditch and the footprints show that the forest livestock come here to drink. They obviously don't like to climb the barrow to ea...

Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion : Bowl barrow on Beaulieu Heath East at grid reference SU411036, looking SE at sunset. The stacks of Fawley refinery and the pylons from Calshot power station are a very modern backdrop to this ancient barrow.
