Hutton Moor HD Aerial Shot, Elevation projection and KML file by Andy B on Tuesday, 04 February 2020
(User Info | Send a Message)
Yorkshire Archaeological Aerial Mapping write: Like Cana Barn and Nun Monkton, both found elsewhere in the survey library, Hutton Moor Henge is another huge neolithic/bronze age monument of unknown purpose.

The henge is clearly visible on the aerial photographs both on Google Earth and elsewhere, and is particularly clear on the below Photomosaic.

Once the data is processed through the ground mapping elevation process the size, structure and shape of the monument becomes clearly visible, with the entrance ways aligned opposite each other clearly visible through the pronounced banks and ditches.

Although obviously ritual in purpose, and clearly aligned over some distance the purpose and history of the henges remains obscure.

On their page they have an HD Aerial Shot, Elevation projection and KML file

Yup - and when I get a chance I'll add a link to go from site pages like this one straight to the zoomed in new map. Should be good!

The Megalithic pop-up map is really useful in clearly showing alignments. Just take a look at the line up of the three Thornborough henges with the Devil's Arrows. Three other henges are very nearly on the same line - Cana, Nunwick and Hutton Moor. This must have been an incredibly important ritual landscape, but it is sadly neglected now - agriculture, massive quarries and a hotch potch of industial warehouses. The three henges mentioned above haven't been photographed for the Portal, so perhaps they are ploughed out. If these sites were in Wiltshire, they would be star attractions with National Trust tea shop and all! Does English Heritage only care about sites in the south?
