Anne T visited on 15th Oct 2017 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Medieval Cross in St. Peter's Churchyard, Bishopton: Driving into Bishopton, I realised looking at the cottages and houses that this was a very old village, and had it not been for all the parked cars, it would have been very picturesque.
The church was locked so we couldn’t go in, but the remains of this cross was visible near the edge of the churchyard. It was easier to photograph it from the road, looking over the wall.
I didn’t photograph the replacement village cross, in the very small village green, near the wall memorial, as I thought it was modern, and we didn’t stop after looking at the earthworks nearby.
The remains of this medieval village cross in the churchyard in the village of Bishopton once stood on the nearby village green. It is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 25802, which tells us that 'the monument was moved to its present location in 1883'.
Pastscape adds: "The monument, which is situated 13 metres to the southwest of the west entrance of the church, includes a base, socket stone and shaft. The base has two steps visible above the surrounding ground level. The lower step is at ground level and is two metres square. The socket stone is 0.75 metres square at its base and 0.45 metres high. the form of the socket stone is divided into three equal parts in its height. The bottom third is square, the middle third is chamfer, and the top third is a square with 0.6 metre sides and chamfered corners. The shaft is original, fitting tightly into the 0.26 metre square central socket. It is 0.23 metres high."
This monument is not scheduled, although it was assessed in 1998. A relatively modern replica of the cross stands at approx. NZ 36464 21276.
