Standing Stone (Menhir) in Berkshire

This is by the road side near Leckhampstead on Hangman's Lane which is the road to Boxford. There is a lane opposite where you can park.
It is on the boundaries of Boxford, Leckhampstead and Leckhampstead Parishes. It is a boundary marker but I prefer to think that it was already there and was used for convenience sake. It has been split in two and been repaired. There must be lots more of these about.

This basic story is attatched to The stone at "Hangman's Stone" (a junction on the A3052) in East Devon. I believe the stone is an old parish boundary marker

The local story behind this stone is that a centuries ago a sheep rustler decided to spend the evening propped up against the stone. He tied off his stolen sheep with rope leashes and settled down for the night. During the night the sheep were startled and ran around the stone, pinning the thief to the stone and throttling him to death with the rope they were tied-up with.
The damage to the stone apparently occured around D-Day (June 6th 1944) in The Second World War. Thousands of troops, predominantly from the US were garrisoned in the area in preparation for the Normandy landings. RAF Welford - less than 1m away was a major glider base and is still used by the United States Air Force to this day. One of the troops allegedly tested a grenade on the stone, causing a substantial diagonal split.
