Tunstall Hills
Tunstall Hills submitted by durhamnature : The barrow, under the triangulation point, on the south, craggy hill. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Twin conical hills south of the city of Sunderland, in an attractive public open space with stunning views over the city and the sea. The twin peaks gave this site its older name of Maiden Paps, long before "Northumberlandia" was thought of.

The area is an SSSI on account of its magnesian limestone flora and geology.

There have been a number of archaeological finds, on each hill, with some possible confusion between the hills. The northern hill, at NZ39085469, has deeper soils and has been ploughed in the past. It is sometimes referred to as the "grassy hill". The southern hill at NZ39145448 has shallow soils over rocky magnesian limestone, and has probably never been ploughed. It is referred to as the "craggy hill".

Tyne and Wear HER 237
A bronze axe head was unearthed by ploughing in 1802 at the north hill. It has been lost.

Tyne and Wear HER 234
Flints, scrapers, cores and limpet shells were unearthed by ploughing in 1929 at the north hill. Some of these or later finds are in the Craven Museum.

Tyne and Wear HER 331 and 154
In 1814 (not 1914, misprinted in the HER) a stone cist 120cm square was excavated from a tumulus 11m across and 1.4 m high. Three urns were found, but subsequently lost. This site is now under the triangulation point on the southern hill.

Tyne and Wear HER 155
Another cist was found in 1887 by some boys preparing a beacon bonfire site on the top of the southern hill. This find is poorly recorded.

Re: Tunstall Hills by Anonymous on Monday, 25 February 2019
The Northern Hill with a rocky outcrop has always been referred to locally as "Rocky Hill"
Next to it to the east is the rounded grassy mound which is generally referred to as the generalised name of "Tunstall Hill"
The Southern End towards the railway cuttings used to be referred to locally as "Vinegar Hill"
The residents further afield from the locality in the rest of Sunderland simply refer to all parts of the hills as "Tunstall Hills"
