Holy Well (Burton Dassett) submitted by Firewater : Plaque on the rear wall of the well house. Can't make out what it says although I think the word at the end of the second row is "LORD". (Vote or comment on this photo)

Holy Well (Burton Dassett)
Holy Well (Burton Dassett) submitted by Firewater : Burton Dassett Well. The cover seems to be built of the local ironstone, that was quarried just up the hill fromt eh site (it's now a Country Park that can be seen from the M40.) The front is open and there are steps leading down into the well itself. It appears to have been filled in at some point, though there is still water in there. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Last time i visited the well there was a lovely witch elm nearby that was a joy to sit under. After contemplating me naval for a while i stode up to the summit and was dumb struck at the vista before me,as off to the NE for as far as i could see was Ley Line. Now i have never witnessed this since or before but and there is always a but? i was reliably informed after the discription i gave, that, that is what i'd seen.Has any one else out there in cyber space seen owt like this?I completely understand that most may think, if not all "Yea right, this ones of the planet!!"but i am just asking a question that may never be answered.

This is a very easy to reach site - you can park right next to it or pay your £1.40 to park in the nearby Country Park, make a day of it and, while you're there, walk the very short distance (couple of hundred yards?) to the well and adjoining church.

The pillars in the church are worth a check. I arrived rather late in the day and it was getting dark so I plan to go back and take another look - but they appear to be adorned with a variety of mythical beasts!

Unusual for these days, the church was unlocked and just has a "please shut the door" notice. It's quite isolated, I suppose. It's still rare, though. There are also the remains of wall paintings inside but it was FAR too dark to see them in any detail.

I'll report back when I've been again.
