Said to be the 2nd largest hillfort in West Yorkshire, (after Castle Hill in Almondbury,) there's a fairly large ditch you can easily walk round, and the old defensive hillfort entrance is clearly visible on the northern side. I was brought up lower down this street (Holmsley Lane) and it's an Iron Age site I believe. Some time ago it was thought to be Saxon, and the nearby streets are called 'Saxon Mount' 'Saxon Avenue' and so on, but it's now known the Council got it wrong. You can park up by the roadside and walk right in, though it's probably not worth a long drive - it's interesting though not spectacular - a bit like a really miniature Maiden Castle, no stonework just earth ditches and ramparts on a hillside. A pleasant walk around though with interesting flora too, takes less than an hour.

The car park now has a gate instead of a chain. There are horses all over the site steadily eroding the areas where you could make out the remains of the ditch and enclosing walls. This is not my main concern however, there is a local builder slowly filling the ditch surrounding the camp with his trades waste product. There is an official waste tip only a quarter of a mile further on.

    Hi Anon!
In all honsty, report this to Heritage Action and get their hot heads no the case. They reckon they care and can do stuff. Look 'em up and ask if they mean what they say. I know it's up North, so they're unlikely to do owt (not big-enough profile), but you could see what they say.
    Good luck - Paul

Hi, I wonder if I would be allowed witha metal detector on this land? Who would I contact the national heritage? Has anyone has permission and found anything?

I don't think you would be allowed with a metal detector I'm afraid. It is listed on the Sites and Monuments record as a scheduled monument. This site formed part of my research for my Archaeology masters and excavation took place here in the sixties I believe. Unfortunately there were no finds of significance, however I think there are dates to secure its Iron Age origin. I'm not clear on the law on metal detecting but if the poster who said that someone was dumping his waste there, that would really skew any metal detecting work

However, your first port of call would be English Heritage if you want to detect, I'm sure someone there could give more info!

A nice car park is situated next to the site, but that is about the only good point. The entrance has a chain nailed across it. The ground across the site has been chewed up by horses. The OS map indicates a spring, which is quite active as a stream runs down the northern side of what seems to be the encampment. There was once a bridge across this stream but that is now just a few stakes in the mud, so the crossing point is a couple of sheets of corrugated iron. All that can be discerned of the settlement is a ditch and bank to the south and eastern sides, heavily overgrown with brambles.

A number of sources, including the local MP's web-site, regard the site of national importance – it's condition hardly reflects that!
