Round Barrow(s) in Yorkshire (North)
Two bronze age round barrows in a very prominent position on Gallow Hill above the villages of Kepwick and Cowesby on the western edge of the Hambleton Hills with extensive views over the VALE OF MOWBRAY. Both are marked on the present day (2023) OS map and well worth a visit because of their location.
They are made of earth and stone and of a similar diameter at about 18m. One of them is known as the Gallow Hill round barrow, this is at SE 48197 89858 and is very prominent within the landscape being some 3.35m high. The other barrow some 50m to the south at SE 48184 89801 is of a lower height at 1.2m and though not as prominent still stands out clearly. Both have been dug into in antiquity and whilst Historic England state (as of 1994) that the barrows lie near the west end of a prehistoric linear earthwork I find this is a bit misleading. The linear earthwork is almost a mile away towards the top of the scarp , terminating just to the west of STEEPLE CROSS. See HERE for more information on the linear earthwork which is known as the Steeple Cross Dyke.
Note: Gallow Hill also overlooks an ancient route known as Red Gate which ran down from the HAMBLETON DROVE ROAD (Hambleton Street, Cleveland Way) near Steeple Cross past FRIAR’S CROSS, then Gallow Hill onto Pen Hill where there is now a deep hollow way taking you down into Kepwick.
