Nuthanger Down
Nuthanger Down submitted by JimChampion : The Nuthanger Down bowl barrow. The overgrown bell barrow is on the other side. Part of a horse jump is peeking in on the left. We had our lunch here, with excellent views over Hampshire to the south (and possibly the Isle of Wight?). (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Barrows in Hampshire

The bowl barrow is 17m in diameter and 2m high and sports a few bushes, grass and wildflowers. A small section of turf is missing from the top of the barrow, revealing the underlying mound of flinty nodules. This barrow is not scheduled, but survives amongst horse jumps on a gallops alongside the Wayfarer's Walk public footpath. A few metres to the east is a bell barrow overgrown by trees and undergrowth, which has been mutilated by rabbit burrows - maybe they came from Watership Down, to the north of the site? [source]

Access The barrows are near the junction of two footpaths on Nuthanger Down, on a SE-facing slope very close to the high point of the hill. The lane leading up from the crossroads east of Sydmonton is very steep and narrow, but there is room to park on the gravelly verge near the signposted Wayfarer's Walk footpath.
