Holy Well (Watnall)
Holy Well (Watnall) submitted by HOLYWELL : The Watnall Holywell (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well / Spring in Nottinghamshire

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) features a page for this holy well, which is a 'stone's throw from Ikea' - see their entry for Holy Well, Watnall, Nottinghamshire, which gives directions for finding this well, together with photographs and a brief archaeology & history.

TNA say: "A plaque near the well’s entrance has a local piece of folklore recorded. This relates that a local boy who lived opposite was very ill and bedridden. A local priest called for water to be drawn for the boy from the well. This was done and the boy became well. Interestingly it’s the only legend of this type—one which records a cure—in all the Nottinghamshire holy wells."

it is a lovely well with a small plaque explaining the story of the boy cured by the well.

As my picture shows this well has two walled approaches and the spring arises in a walled in enclosure with an iron gate with a dove affixed and the words Holy Well if you zoom in. It is easy to find off trough lane. It appears to be a modern holy well, the legend associated to it only being from the 1900s. A local boy lay ill and the priest asked for water from a spring. He was cured. Perhaps it already had a reputation but facts are lacking. The well's water was used to baptism. It is a delightful find in a built up part of the county and should be better known.
