Bradgate Hunt's Hill Stone submitted by Stefan Spencer : Bradgate Hunt's Hill Stone Information required please. Where is this? (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone in Leicestershire. Although this 5 foot stone was certainly erected by humans Bob Trubshaw (see talk next month in Leicester) is of the opinion that it was a bunch of 20th century Boy Scouts! He doesn't elaborate on his reasons however.

Situated just outside Bradgate Park in Leicestershire at Grid Ref SK524116, turn left at the public toilets and enter the wood to it's left. The stone stands right in the middle by a large Holly bush. Several recumbant stones surround the stone and there is a possible cist just to the west (other side of the bush).

Note: Bradgate Park excavation open day, Sun 2nd Jul 2017, where they have found a nationally significant Upper Palaeolithic site and prehistoric earthworks, see the comments on our page for more details. Lots more British Archaeology Festival events coming up, more next week

Bradgate Park Upper Palaeolithic site and prehistoric earthworks by Andy B on Saturday, 24 June 2017
(User Info | Send a Message)
Bradgate Park Fieldschool (2015-2019)
This major student training and research excavation project focuses on the upland landscape of Bradgate Park, Leicestershire.

Bradgate Park is located 10km north-west of the City of Leicester and covers an 830-acre recreational park which attracts c. 400,000 visitors each year. The landscape is designated as a SSSI and is described by Natural England as “one of the finest remaining examples of ancient parkland in Leicestershire” containing some of the “last remaining fragments of wet heathland in the County”.

The park is first documented in 1241 (as a deer park) and is known primarily as the location of one of the first unfortified brick-built aristocratic houses in England (c. 1520), which was later the birth place and childhood home of Lady Jane Grey: the ‘nine days queen’.

However, recent excavations of a known late Upper Palaeolithic open site (c. 15,000 years old) situated atop the north spur of a gorge overlooking the River Lin has revealed an in situ stone tool assemblage consistent with Creswellian activity. This is one of only a few sites in the UK dated to this period and is thus of national and international significance.

A LiDAR and subsequent walkover survey of the park, conducted in 2014, identified over 250 potential archaeological features not documented within official records.

Some of these earthworks appear prehistoric in date and include terracing and a ditched enclosure, which suggests that human occupation and interaction with the landscape has a longer history than previously recognised. Despite the prehistoric and historic importance of the Park, there remain many unanswered questions, which this joint venture with ULAS, hopes to answer. The project runs for five seasons from 2015-2019.

From ESgt:

In June 2015 Hunt's Hill Standing Stone was visited by East Midlands Dowsing Group

Describing it:
"The site is overgrown with trees and shrubs, the roots of which have disturbed and broken many of the nearby stones. The dowsers felt there was a mixture of placed stones and incorporated rocky outcrops in what would once have been a clearing. There was a smaller, disturbed, stone opposite the standing stone giving a possible circle diameter of about 20 yards, sloping downwards to the west".
