Beacon Hill (Warnford)
Beacon Hill (Warnford) submitted by JimChampion : May 2005. Looking south at the largest bowl barrow in the cemetery: the other bowl barrows are lost amongst the scrub. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This barrow cemetery includes six bowl barrows and a saucer barrow situated on the steeply sloping eastern face of a spur of Beacon Hill (west of Warnford in the Meon valley).

[source] Only one of the bowl barrows (next to the path at SU605224) and the saucer barrow (further down the slope at SU607225) are obvious. This site has a nice symmetry with the barrow cemetery on the west-facing spur of Old Winchester Hill on the other side of the Meon valley.

Access The barrow cemetery is within the Beacon Hill National Nature Reserve, which has a convenient small car park at grid ref SU598227. Go through the gate to the southwest and follow the track with the beech plantation to your left and open fields to your right. Shortly after passing the OS trig point climb the stile and you'll easily find the two obvious barrows. Keep going down the spur and you'll cross the medieval "hollow ways": trackways worn deep into the chalk of the hill over centuries of use.

Beacon Hill (Warnford)
Beacon Hill (Warnford) submitted by JimChampion : Category B. Admittedly a late spring image (6 May 2005) - this shows the second stage of spring where the ground-based plants have had their chance and the leaves spring from the branches of these beeches in the Beacon Hill NNR near Warnford. There is a tenuous prehistoric link - I was on my way back from having a look at a disc barrow on the side of Beacon Hill, overlooking the Meon Valley. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Beacon Hill (Warnford)
Beacon Hill (Warnford) submitted by JimChampion : May 2005. Looking down into the Meon valley from the east-facing spur of Beacon Hill. In the foreground is the saucer barrow, around 15m in diameter and surrounded by a 2.5m ditch and 5m wide outer bank. On the horizon towards the right is Old Winchester Hill which has its own round barrow cemetery. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Beacon Hill (Warnford)
Beacon Hill (Warnford) submitted by JimChampion : May 2005. A view of the most prominent bowl barrow in this cemetery on the spur of Beacon Hill. It is about 10m wide and 0.5m high, and is surrounded by a visible ditch and outer bank. Great views from here across to the Isle of Wight to the south. (Vote or comment on this photo)
