Hillfort in Northamptonshire, not to be confused with the nearby Arbury banks at Chipping Warden.

I grew up in the nearby village of Staverton and remember visiting this site as part of a school project when I was very young. There is a very definite and very square ditch and embankment about 200 meters across.

I seem to remember that Arbury Hill is one of the highest points in Northamptonshire, it can be found off the Badby to Upper Catesby road. Unfortunately there is poor access, but maybe permission to look can be gained from the nearby farm.

Although this site has long been regarded as fortified, its status was questioned by the Royal Commission in 1981 - though its first description in Saxon charters described it as a fort: ealden burh aet Baddanbyrig. The first question-mark over its artificial antiquity was in the Victoria County History (1906), where they thought that the scarps on the south and western sides were neither of a defensive nature, nor of ancient origin. This thought was later echoed in the Journal of the Northants Natural History Society (1928). It was then rejected as a site of antiquity by Ordnance Survey. But as the Royal Commission report stated, "it is not now possible to determine whether there was a hill fort here, as ploughing of the summit and slopes over a long period has removed most of the evidence," adding that "the features which had the appearance of ramparts were probably natural."

lol...looking at the aerial photos of the site, it would seem that a scrambling track for motorbikes has been made there..So, if you go on the right day, it would seem that access is much improved!!!
