Eston Nab Camp
Eston Nab Camp submitted by SolarMegalith : Eston Nab Camp - rampart and ditch of the univallate hillfort (photo taken on July 2017). (Vote or comment on this photo)
The earliest phase of this univallate hillfort dates back to the Late Bronze Age when a palisade enclosure was erected here. Later it was replaced by a rampart, ditch and counterscarp bank visible today.

The semi-circular hillfort reaches 250 x 120m dimensions.

johndhunter adds: "There is more information on the Eston Nab hill fort, palisaded settlement and beacon itself at Historic England's List Entry Number 1011273."

Note: Archaeologists believe they have found evidence of a henge in the Eston Hills, Middlesborough. The Ice and Fire project has just completed a two week dig - more details in the comments on our page.

What a great video, not just the archaelogy, but also highlighting the horrendous effects of the neglect of the economy of Tees-side which has led to problems similar to those in the impoverished valleys around the Welsh Rhondda.

Huge discovery of historic henge on Eston Hills by Andy B on Sunday, 20 August 2017
(User Info | Send a Message)
Archaeologists believe they've found evidence of ancient ritual site, and await confirmation - 'Huge benefit for Teesside,' says project leader

Exciting new discoveries on the Eston Hills dates life on Teesside at more than 10,000 years old.

Archaeologists digging on the hills have discovered what’s believed to be an ancient henge - evidence of mesolithic life, along with flint and other materials, dating back to around 8,500BC.

Adam Mead has led the Ice and Fire project on the hills, which dug for a fortnight last month close to the area locally known as the “sheep dip”.

Those on the project are now anxiously waiting for recognition from Historic England, and want to use their discovery to lobby for the hills to be absorbed into the North York Moors National Park - giving the area, beset by crime, fires and vandalism for years, crucial added protection.

Adam said: “A henge is such a special, ritualistic place and to possibly find one in Eston Hills is huge news for Teesside.

“It would be used for ritual slaughter, for the celebration of special events, the summer or winter solstice. It speaks to the fact there was a significant settlement in our area such a long time ago.

“If we could use this find to get National Park status, then that would protect the hills and could only be a huge benefit for Teesside.”

Ice and Fire - Eston Hills Rescue Archaeology Project - July 2017 by Andy B on Monday, 10 April 2017
(User Info | Send a Message)
Ice and Fire is a Heritage Lottery funded community archaeology project designed to explore the prehistoric archaeology of the Eston Hills on Teesside. Persistent vandalism, illegal off-road vehicles and arson are jeopardising the fragile heritage which dates back over 10,000 years to the Mesolithic period, after the last Ice Age.

The project will include a range of fieldwork and finds analysis activities which will help to establish the state of preservation in damaged areas, including a wetland. Local community volunteers will be trained in archaeological techniques so that no previous experience is needed. The goal, ultimately, is to inspire greater awareness about the fragile heritage and wildlife habitats being put at risk, encouraging a greater sense of pride in the area.

Ice and Fire Project Director Adam Mead and Teesside Archaeological Society Chair Dave Errickson werer interviewed by BBC Radio Tees live from the Eston Hills to explain the community archaeology project’s goals – in search of 10,000 years of heritage.
