St. Andrew's Well
St. Andrew's Well submitted by DavidCWoods : I'm pretty sure this is the well - it's certainly in the place indicated on the OS map of 1883, but I suppose it could be the entrance to a nuclear bunker ! (Vote or comment on this photo)
Hope's "Legendary Lore" states that St. Andrew's Well is a few miles from Bradfield, but in fact in is only a few hundred yards from the Church of St. Andrew. Despite being marked on the 1883 map it still proved difficult to find - the Rector gave me directions, but I became bogged down (literally) and so tried another route.

Taking the road northwest from the village, towards Upper Basildon, I crossed the River Pang and turned left on to the riverside path just past the bridge. A few hundred yards along the path, and to the north west of the church was a capped well, fenced around and in a field bounded by barbed wire. Fortunately it was close enough for photography; attended by a tree, despite the wind and rain it still retains a presence.

The rector told me of a local story of a tunnel leading from the church to the well; if there it would certainly need good drainage !

St. Andrew's Well
St. Andrew's Well submitted by DavidCWoods : As can be seen there's quite a rural atmosphere. I'm afraid I don't know the type of tree attending the well, but it had lots of red berries.

Access is prevented by the barbed wire fence around the field. (Vote or comment on this photo)
