Hillfort in Hampshire

Remains of an Iron Age hillfort, with a single rampart and ditch enclosing almost 15 acres. The site has suffered a lot of development in recent times: it is surrounded by a housing estate and in 1977 a school was built within the ramparts.

Excavations discovered two Iron Age phases; firstly from the 6th to 5th century, and secondly from the 2nd to 1st centuries BC. A close set palisade had later been covered by a rampart and then subsequently enlarged. [source]

From SolarMegalith: Winklebury Camp hillfort is surrounded by houses, most if it's earthworks are heavily damaged. The best preserved part of the site is the eastern one, where embankment and ditch are in very good condition (unfortunately the local people seem to use it as a rubbish dump - disgrace). Inside the hillfort there is a school and couple of playgrounds.

The school built within the hillfort is appropriately named Fort Hill Community School, and according to their website was the first purpose built community school in Hampshire. Their website also contains some history of the hill. The site was excavated by the Department of the Environment before the school was built in 1977.
