Gilling Long Cairn submitted by SumDoood : Seen from the north. Within a 2km radius there are many "Tumuli" marked on the OS map and I would hope there is a better than usual chance of finding some of them due to their being in wooded plantations, rather than recklessly ploughed out. There is a brief description in James Dyer's Prehistoric England book (pg 219). He states:

'This long cairn is best seen in winter or spring when bracken growth is low. It is 45 metres long, 12 metres wide and 2.4 metres high and its south-eastern end. It has been damaged by a series of excavation pits along its length, perhaps when it was dug during the 19th century. It is constructed of sand, with a stone kerb. An area of stone paving on the old ground surface, suggesting a mortuary enclosure, probably marked the site of the burials, perhaps destroyed by the acid soil. A later cist burial with a food vessel and flints was inserted into the mound'.

You could also try your local County Sites and Monuments Record, usually held by the Archaeology Department of your County Council. The record often includes a list of sources.

Do you have any photographs of the site, I would love to see it?
