St Mary Bishophill Junior
St Mary Bishophill Junior submitted by coin : The cross shaft. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A fragment of a Saxon/Viking cross shaft lies next to the archway to the tower - this archway is said to be the city's Roman southern gateway which was moved and reconstructed here.

The church boasts a fine Saxon tower which re-uses a lot of Roman material. Other features include stained glass, a small relief carving by the altar and medieval bells. It is probably the oldest surviving church in York.

Access: The church is frequently closed, but I have been on a Saturday twice and it was open both times.
