The English city of York has, since Roman times, been defended with walls of one form or another. In 71 A.D., the Romans built a fort occupying about 50 acres on the banks of the River Ouse, and surrounded it with a rectangle of walls. The original fort was replaced in 108 A.D. by a massive stone structure with walls that survived the centuries. The original walls have had many additions in Medieval and Victorian times. Not much of the remaining stonework is of Roman origin, and the course of the wall has been substantially altered since Roman times.

The Multangular Tower is the best example of standing Roman remains in York. It is on the northern side of the gardens, between the Yorkshire Museum and St Leonard’s Hospital. You can see the tower and fine stretches of the fortress wall from both sides, inside and out.
