Round Barrow in Yorkshire (North)

This large Bronze Age round barrow is located on the top of Round Hill. It has 23m in diameter and is 2m high, its quarry ditch is completely buried. There is a trigonometrical survey pillar on the mound.

Round Hill East submitted by johndhunter : Hand Stone at NZ 59427 01513 – Beside the Cleveland Way at the point where it runs close by the round barrow on Round Hill (incidently the highest point on the North Yorkshire Moors) is a Guidestone known as the Urra Moor Hand Stone . This view taken in August 2018 shows the Hand Stone with the Round Barrow behind it (Vote or comment on this photo)

Round Hill East submitted by johndhunter : Hand Stone at NZ 59427 01513 – Whilst the crude hand at the top of this the south face of the stone, indicating to the east can still be made out. The writing below is now more or less illegible. R.H. Hayes in his 1988 book “Old Roads and Pannierways in North East Yorkshire” page 42 tells us that it says “ This is the way to Kirby” meaning Kirbymoorside. R.H. Hayes in his 1988 book “Old Roads and Pannierways in North East Yorkshire” page 42 tells us that it says “This is the way to Stoxla” meaning Stokesley. Hayes in his 1988 book “Old Roads and Pannierways in North East Yorkshire” page 42 tells us that this east / west section was originally a paved trod known in 1642 as “Street Way” It ran from Rudland Rigg to Clay Bank at the head of Bilsdale, He also ...
