York Minster
York Minster submitted by coin : Viking cross slab beneath York Minster. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Museum in Yorkshire (North)

Beneath York's medieval minster lies The Undercroft, a museum containing a number of Viking crosses and artefacts (notably the Horn of Ulf), as well as the York Gospels, a Saxon manuscript written in 1020. The minster itself is built on the site where Constantine the Great was acclaimed Emperor by the Roman army in 306 AD. Other notable features are the Crypt of Saint William and the Norman Doomstone.

Just to note that I arranged a visit here a year ago with York Minster Vergers to see the cross fragments but due to family illness wasn't able to attend. I still have the email from the Vergers saying I wasn't allowed to take photographs in the Undercroft, but could in the Minster. Don't know if this has changed since. There is also a fee to go down into the Undercroft.

There are also two holy wells recorded as being in the Minster (Source: Holy Wells in Yorkshire Part 1 by Edna Whelan):

St. Peter's Well which the Verger's email said: "As for St. Peter’s well in the Eastern Crypt, there is no well visible. However, reports suggest that the font located down in the Crypt is built directly above the original well, possibly where King Edwin was also baptised in 627. There is also a Roman column base viewable through a hole in the ground, which also sometimes gets water in it when the water table is running high, but this is not a holy well."

There is also the Zouche Chapel Well, in the Zouche Chapel of the Minster "located half way down the South Quire Aisle .... it does have a cover over it, because we have Sunday School taking place in the chapel each week."

    Hi Anne,

Sorry to hear you weren't able to visit the minster. At the moment I think photography is permitted in The Undercroft (at least the stewards have never stopped me), and the charge for entry to the minster includes The Undercorft, and then there is an additional charge for climbing the tower. I was not aware that there is a well in the Zouche Chapel - I haven't been able to visit it as there is some work going on with the window above the entrance to the chapel - and is therefore blocking the door.

There is a Norman well that is also visible in The Undercroft.

Hope you are able to visit it sometime,
    Connor.

      Hello Connor,

Many thanks for your reply. I definitely want to come back to York sometime soon, as we've been visiting a lot of sites on the University of Durham's Corpus of Anglo Saxon Stone Sculpture. They have 49 cross fragments/sculptured stones listed on the York/East Yorkshire section (recently released on their web site).

If you are interested, start off with York Minster 01 and use the arrows on the right hand side of the screen to scroll through. Each page tells you where the stone is located - the Minster, the Museum, etc.

      Best wishes,
      Anne T.
