Bransdale Ridge BS1
Bransdale Ridge BS1 submitted by johndhunter : BS1 boundary stone at SE 60792 96695 – West Face, October 2017. The northern end of Bransdale is behind the stone and on the other side of that, the ridge known as Rudland Rigg. The H engraved on the stone stands for Helmsley whose ancient parish boundary the stone once marked. Today (2023) it marks the eastern boundary of the civil parish of Pockley. Marker Stone in Yorkshire (North)

A slightly tapering squared C18 monolith, about 4ft* in height and made of sandstone. It is one of about ten such stones in a boundary line string that runs along Bransdale Ridge. It has the letter K engraved on its east face and H on its west face.

Today (2023) at this point in the line the stone marks the boundary between the civil parishes of Bransdale to the east and Pockley to the west. In much earlier times, at least pre 1832, it marked the boundary between the ancient parishes of Kirkdale to the east and Helmsley to the West. Hence the K engraved on the stone will stand for Kirkdale and H for Helmsley. Bransdale or more accurately Bransdale West as it was then and Pockley were at that time townships of the said parishes.

*Forgot to measure it, this is a guesstimate from memory.
