Cup and Ring marks or other Rock Art in Yorkshire (North Riding)

This cup and ring marked stone is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 28111, which says: "This stone is set into the E side of the wall surmounting Park Dyke at NZ 6124 0836. It is an upright stone 0.7m high, 0.5m wide and 0.2m thick with two incised rings each about 0.1m in diameter. The upper ring is more clearly defined and has a central hole. Neither are 'cup-and-ring' marks. Alongside is another large stone which is roughly incised with a letter R suggesting that both stones may have been boundary markers of some kind." The description on the record reads 'an alleged cup and ring marked stone.' There is no record on the Historic England website.

Grid reference needs changing - The accuracy of the site page would be enhanced if the four figure grid reference given is replaced by the eight figure grid reference NZ 6124 0836 where the Rock Art actually is on Warren Moor. Other Rock Art on Warren Moor is also in this general area . Using the four figure grid ref means the icon on the map gives the impression that the Rock Art is down by the main road rather than up on the moor

Hi, John. Grid reference now updated, and I've found an entry on Pastscape for it, which I've added in the main text above. Thanks for letting us know, and helping to improve the grid references and information on these sites. Much appreciated.

A four figure grid reference for Rock Art is another big ask. However in Brown and Chappel’s book Prehistoric Rock Art in the NY Moors , 2012 Edition they list 4 items in this area (page 268) all of which are built in or are nearby a dilapidated section of drystone walling which runs along the top of a banked earthwork known as Park Pale which marked the boundary of a medieval hunting park on Warren Moor itself. Initially I intended to try and locate all four items by walking beside the wall from north to south after a steep climb up to what is known as the Park. A dose of reality quickly set in, keeping in mind these items were logged in the early nineties, the wall no doubt collapsing a lot more since they first visited, with long reed and marsh grass growing along the east side of the wall and bracken to the west side. This made it awkward to get close to the wall on the east side especially. As this was part of a longer walk that I was doing I decided not to bother with the three smaller stones and leave that to the real Rock Art enthusiasts and concentrate looking for the one large stone mentioned in the book . This is stone listed as site number 2a at Park Pale Warren Moor It is described as (65 x 50 x 23cm) with two single ring markings on one face (east side) and a small central ‘cup’ in the upper ring. It is part of the drystone wall (east side) with adjacent stones having letter like markings Its eight figure grid reference given in the book is NZ 6124 0836. I forgot to take a ten figure reference while I was there but it doesn’t matter it is easy to spot , it also stands close by a collapsed section of the walling.
