Misc. Earthwork in Oxfordshire

From Pastscape:

"A trench, 4ft. deep and 35ft. wide, commands the Icknield Way
for a mile along the top of Swyncombe Downs. It commences at
the highest part of the hill on the E. (approximately SU
685914), and runs due W. along its N. edge, and turns NW to
descend to within 130 yards of the Icknield Way. At the point
where it turns NW (SU 672915) two slighter lines appear to run
to the W. (to SU668915) and SE (to SU673914), as though to protect
this narrow part of the hill from being taken in the rear.

These linear earthworks are comparable with the L.B.A. ranch
boundaries of Wessex and comprise a ditch, averaging 10.0m.
wide, 1.0m. deep, with a bank on the downhill side, 6.0m. wide,
up to 1.0m. in height. The major work runs from the top of
steep slopes, above the Icknield Way, at SU 66889152, follows
the S. side of a ridge with the bank on the S. side to SU
67239155, where it is crossed by a similar work running across
the ridge from SU 67129175 to where it fades out on open arable
downland at SU 67319142. The work continues eastwards above
northerly slopes and now with the bank to the N., as far as SU
68599140, where it also fades out, on leaving woodland, for
open arable downland. "
