Little Butser
Little Butser submitted by JimChampion : May 2005. A panoramic view of Little Butser, looking east from the much higher neighbouring northerly spur of Butser Hill. Cross dykes separate the Little Butser spur from Butser Hill proper (to the right). The town in the distance is Petersfield and the A3 runs very close by. You can't miss Butser Hill as you drive south on the A3: its the massive one with a mast on top. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Village or Settlement in Hampshire

An early Iron Age farm occupied this site atop Little Butser: a chalk spur projecting north from the Butser Hill plateau. The steep sides of the spur provide a natural defence and Butser Hill shelters the site from the prevailing southwesterly winds. According to Hampshire Treasures coarse sherds, quern fragments and pot boilers were found in this area.

Between 1972 and 1989 Little Butser was the site of an experimental archaeology centre: the original "Butser Ancient Farm", which relocated to a much more accessible site near Chalton in 1991. The Butser Ancient Farm website provides many details of the farm's purpose, research and history. The most obvious remains of the project at Little Butser are the rounded rectangular earthworks which once surrounded the experimental settlement.

Access Little Butser is within the Queen Elizabeth Country Park. The nearest car park is at Butser Hill picnic area: see the Butser Hill page for details.

Little Butser submitted by JimChampion : May 2005. Looking down onto the Little Butser spur. The overgrown pseudo-Iron Age earthworks are visible in the centre of the picture, in the form of a square enclosure with bank and external ditch. The flecks of yellow are cowslips, which are thriving on this site. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Little Butser
Little Butser submitted by JimChampion : May 2005. An 'experimental earthwork' (ditch and bank) at the northern end of Little Butser. It must have been here for at least 15 years, and the silting of the ditch and growth on the bank (including this young hawthorn tree) is quite noticeable. The exposed white chalk is visible from quite some distance, and is a reminder of how visually striking the earthworks on the chalk downs must have bee... (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Hello I have a photo of Little Buster Ancient Farm experiment that was taken around 73-74 by my grandfather. It was taken from almost the same position as your third picture. I could send you a copy if you're interested.
