St Rumwald's Well
St Rumwald's Well submitted by DavidCWoods : With clear evidence of restoration and a fence (in fact two) to separate it from the adjoining field, the history and importance of the well is clearly acknowledged. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Buckinghamshire. I visited in February 2005 and took the footpath from the Tingewick Road following the old railway line to the east – this is just by the bridge. I followed the path – somewhat muddy – for about 300 yards until some rustic steps led off up the hill to the right. Beware, for there are several sets of steps and the set I wanted was concealed on my visit by a fallen tree.

At the top of the slope was a fence with a stile and a small enclosure containing the remains of the well. This has recently been restored, although it is dry as the water table has fallen. A stone lined shallow pit, with the remains of steps leading down into it, are what is left of the building constructed over the spring in medieval times. Some evidence of worked stone remains, and an informative notice gives some details of the site’s history.

I visited this site yesterday August 5th 2018; sadly it has been vandalised with bottles left lying in and around it and evidence of fires been set within the well . Some of the masonry has been demolished and left in situ by obviously thoughtless vandals. It could do with a plaque to state exactly what it is.
