Turf Maze in Yorkshire (North Riding)

Known as 'City of Troy', this is situated beside the road, on top of the Howardian Hills, approximately 13 miles north of York, between the villages of Brandsby and Dalby. Sometimes called the Skewsby maze because of its proximity to that village, it is approached by following the B1363 out of Brandsby as far as the crossroads. Turn right (signposted Dalby and Terrington) then sharp left. Continue for a mile or so, past a small wood on your right and you will see the maze surrounded by a low white wooden railing. The maze is 26 by 22 feet, of 'classical' design and maintained in excellent condition. It is the smallest turf maze in Europe.

Peter measures and walks the Turf Maze in the Howardian Hills North Yorkshire. This is one of only 8 ancient unicursal Turf Maze constructions in the United Kingdom. Peter walks the maze with his friends, and gives his own hypothesis on the origins and purpose of the mazes, which include a symbolic trip to Jerusalem.

    1. Should Peter and friends be walking over an ancient site? If every tourist visiting this site did this there would be nothing to see!.

      To answer your questions anon.
      1) Yes, anyone can and should walk the maze, it's an interesting experience. In common with many ancient places, (although its antiquity isn't determined) it's not exactly overrun with tourists, it's very easy to miss and drive by, even when you're looking for it. I've been many times and only once encountered someone else there. Also, it's very well maintained by the owner.

      2) Hardly, it's an amateur video made for that group's own record of their visit. It's not meant to be an accurate scientific appraisal of the site, nor was that ever suggested.

My sister and I just went to this turf labyrinth today (3/13/06). This was our 2nd attempt to find it and the directions from this site made the difference. The formerly white rail fence is now just plain wood and there is a public walkways sign/pointer near the Wooded area that says "City of Troy Maze" pointing toward it. It is a small labyrinth and was a bit muddy today. Yet, fabulous to see. It was my sister's 1st exposure to a labyrinth. She lives in the UK/York area and may take other visitors there. I return to America for explorations of those labyrinths. Thanks for the directions.

Strange, & very good, to see this wierd little site again. I used to cycle past it occasionally when I lived in York, & had lost its exact location - doesn't appear on my landranger map. I find this whole area, between York and the North York Moors, is full of these interesting little corners; off the tourist trail, and all the more compelling for this reason. Anyone know the age & provenance of this maze?

Note this is a great little maze. I would give ambience a score of 4 not 1. The view over surrounding countryside is great. There is a nice bench for a picnic right next to maze. Top Spot A+++

    Ambience is a very personal matter, as this is within inches of a road and cars buzz up and down it frequently it spoils the ambience for me. I would stick with my original score but I see someone has already changed it. :(
