Standing Stone (Menhir) in Yorkshire (North)

A late prehistoric standing stone at the northern end of Stone Haggs, about 150ft to the west of the Blakey Road. It is an irregular shaped slab which leans to the west. My very rough measurements show that it is about 3ft tall and ten inches thick. Its width varies, being about 15 inches at the top and 32 inches at the bottom. Though not particularly tall it stands out quite well in the landscape.

The stone is HERR Monument 1571495.

Stone Haggs itself was once though to be a ‘British Settlement’ and is marked as such on older historical OS maps prior to 1952. However it has since been determined that it is in fact an area of old ironstone workings, possibly mediaeval in origin. This is HERR Monument 58898
